Friday Night Salon

Discussion topics for March 2, 2007:

1. What are the role and function of a presidential library?

2. Is immigration good for a democracy?

3. The defining adjective of American culture is "excessive." True or False?

OK, blogfriends, give me some foundational input here, especially since all I can think of for the first topic is that scene in Zoolander when Ben Stiller says, "How can we be expected to teach children how to read good when they can't even fit inside the building."

My reenactment of anything Zoolander might not be very welcome at the salon... I should probably stay away from Idiocracy, Spaceballs, and The Three Amigos as well:

El Guapo: Would you say I have a plethora of pinatas?

Jefe: A what?

El Guapo: A plethora.

Jefe: Oh yes. You have a plethora.

El Guapo: Jefe, what is a plethora?

Jefe: Why, El Guapo?

El Guapo: You told me I have a plethora, and I just would like to know if you know what a plethora is. I would not like to think that a person would tell someone that he has a plethora and find out that that person has no idea what it means to have a plethora.

Jefe: Forgive me El Guapo. I know that I, Jefe, do not have your superior intellect and education. But could it be that once again, you are angry at something else and are looking to take it out on me?...

The Three Amigos! I Love that movie! It so reminds me of you! Yeah I suggest you stay away from that!

Sorry I don't have much to say about the Salon topic!

I agree with the excessive part of the whole culture thing, considering I am turning into the fat typical American. Good Lord. And...immigration affecting democrcacy? eh...if they vote, I guess, but how many immigrants (or US citizens, for that matter) actually take part in democracy? And I don't know the role of a Presidential Library, my guess is that it's the same as any old library, just in case he ever wants to go read.

Good Night!

1. Presidential Librarys - what is the point of them??? They seem more like monuments to the past than places of learning.

2. I saw a bumper sticker last week that said:

"If you think Immigration is ruining America, tell it to a Native American!"

3. Hell yes we are a culture of excess - 'Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness' has become 'Consumption, No Boundaries, and Instant Gratification'!

Kinda cool that the topics for the salon just get "bumped", much like a guest on Letterman. I thought that presidential library thing would just go away... Since it didn't, I have to agree that it seems like presidential libraries are pretty much monuments to the past instead of living houses of learning. It's all about bragging rights.

Immigration feeds democracy. As long as the immigrants are willing to paticipate and exercise their rights as citizens, then democracy can only be enriched by such a system.

I don't know if "excessive" is THE defining adj. of American culture, but I don't think anyone can deny that it does define us. Not only are we fat, fat, FAT (a la "Supersize Me") but we overconsume alcohol, gasoline, pornography, drugs, nicotine, plastic, etc. We ruin the ozone layer with our reckless pollution and then just crank up the AC and ignore the problem (thereby perpetuating the cycle). Look at Hollywood and the excess there. Look at the richest of the rich and the poorest of the poor.

Anyway, that's all I have to say about that... Let me leave you with:

"My little buttercup, has the sweetest..."
"E-smile! E-smile!!!!!!"
