Donnie Darko completely messed with my head, and after I saw it, I sobbed for 5 minutes and then had to sit in silence for at least 20. I don't know why, exactly - AND yes, I am weird because of it..
Anyway, I love the remake of Mad World and it reminds me of whatever catharsis I had when I watched the movie.

I Ginger...Donnie Darko was written and directed by Shaun's cousin. We are learning more and more that he has a very "different" mind. From what we understand from the family and some overseas news media he is working on another film...it is even more "out there". We bought Donnie Darko when it came out on DVD, watched the first few minuets of it and then turned it off. I could not take it.
Hi Amy!
I know why you would turn the movie off in the first few minutes. The dinner scene alone is pretty..um.. interesting, especially with the language and all. HOWEVER I can't say that I disliked the film. In fact the ending idea is that the main character - somewhere between his psychosis and a "scientific" worm hole - is happy to lay down his life for his friends and family. This movie really hit me somewhere internally - especially the parts about love and fear NOT being the extremes of human emotion and the fact that we excuse or explain away every fault as opposed to facing them.
Also, isn't it weird that so many big name actors are in it?!
My students are the ones who suggested it to me. A surprising number of them think it's a really great movie which means that it is destined to become a cult classic...(?) Maybe I should invite Shaun's cousin to come and speak to my film students at our school. He could possibly clear-up a few things for them.
Hey, it's GREAT that you're in my blog-o-sphere! I miss you and love you!! Cool, too, that you're posting! Keep it up and hug all of your boys for me!
