orange flares; swaying
in the wind, their congregations
are a levitation
of bright dust, of thin
and lacy leaves.
There isn't a place
in this world that doesn't
sooner or later drown
in the indigos of darkness,
but now, for a while,
the roughage
shines like a miracle
as it floats above everything
with its yellow hair.
Of course nothing stops the the cold,
black, curved blade
from hooking forward—
of course
loss is the great lesson.
But I also say this: that light
is an invitation
to happiness,
and that happiness,
when it's done right,
is a kind of holiness,
palpable and redemptive.
Inside the bright fields,
touched by their rough and spongy gold,
I am washed and washed
in the river
of earthly delight—
and what are you going to do—
what can you do
about it—
deep, blue night?

So here is another in the long list of reasons why I love you: you believe in, and therefore show others the power of, the healing ability of words.
I love Mary Oliver, too.
It's lovely to see this picture put to such good use
G- We are in town. If you and Rich would like, and are able, join us tomorrow (Monday) at Chuy's in Dallas at 1pm for a meal. Celebrating Memorial Day and my bday which is Tues. Would love to see you, hug your neck, and meet Rich!
Hi Michelle,
Maybe we can make it. My mom is in town to help get us all set for my surgery on Tues. We'll see what happens.
I want to meet Andy and also, it would be great to see you!!!
And Happy birthday!
IF not, totally understand, especially with your surgery Tues. But, if you are in need of decompress and laugh time, feel free to come, mom and all. Love you girl, and will be praying for Tuesday.
If we do get to go, what should we look for? (in other words should we look for you and Andy, or a party of 75 thousand?)
Would we recognize each other? It's been what.. 10 years?! :)
When was the last time I saw you? Was it at John and Lisa's wedding? I remember going to your place in Lubbock, but I can't remember when that was..
HOw funny! There will be less than 20 folks, not even sure who is coming. Look for a 6'2 guy with a bald head, that's Andy. I'm the shorter girl with dark hair beside him...or go onto my blog and look at pics. That's funny, it has been a LONG time. Love you much kid.
Hey! I just read a Mary Oliver in my new poetry book, Good Poems for Hard Times.
I should so send you a copy of that book.
I love you, my friend.
And the trip to Vancouver to see you in June? I'm SO doing it. I'm jealous of your conversation here with Michelle. :)
Lisa,
Yes, we're definitely still on for Vancouver!!! (that is if I survive London... Mark!:-))
And yes, I would love to read your Mary Oliver book. I'm just learning about her thanks to the amazing Christine. In fact, this summer our IB kids are doing an assignment on one of her books of poetry called 'American Primitive'. The kids will actually have to respond to posted questions on our IB blog(called IB Summer Salon which will be up and running in July), and hopefully they can also respond to each other's insight.
Michelle,
I am so sorry I missed the Chuy's lunch. We ended up at a place called the Oasis for our Memorial Day lunch, where we could sip sangria next to a lake. But really, Joe Pool Lake is less than a mile from my house, which made it easier for me to come home when things got too.. uncomfortable, which is why I'm having surgery tomorrow - to make things more comfortable. I hope you understand.
I do hope you had a great time, though. Chuy's is one of my favorite places in D (after Campisi's of course), and I am really sorry I missed seeing you.
:(
Girl, you do NOT need to apologize. Taking care of yourself physically right now is your FIRST priority, not eating at a Mexican restaurant. Glad you stayed close to home.
Vancouver? No fair, sounds fun, I wanna go! Hee hee...poo, I think this was our summer trip.
Will say a prayer for you tomorrow.
Dear Mrs. Haag,
I just wanted to say thank you for being such an amazing and insightful person. Your class and your personality really helped me get through my senior year. I appreciate your kindness, and I will miss you very much.
Love Always,
Justin
ps:good luck with your surgery!
