Homecoming '07

I'm such a goob. No matter how hard I fought it in high school and college, and no matter how many times I roll my eyes or say that I'm not one of those girls, I have to admit the disastrous, embarrassing truth: I LOVE homecoming. All of it. And yes, there is a football game (and I do love me some sports), but it's not all about the game or the pep rally or mums (remember mums?!!), etc.. I love the spirit of it - the idea that your extended family is coming home. Literally. It's one of the wonderful things that brings folks together, back to their communities, and our community is incredible.

Our school has a red wagon parade - any club who wants to participate decorates a wagon for the parade and then donates that wagon to charity. Included in the festivities are, of course, a pep rally complete with alumni (dating all the way back to the 1940 graduating class!), an insane number of cheerleaders (as only Texas would require), the band, drill team, and football team (also Texas style), but there's some sort of magic in the whole. Ergo, I ♥ homecoming. The game is tonight. I'll let you know how we do. Kick 'em Colts!!

I'm sad to report that we lost our game. But in our defence, we were matched against one of the biggest/baddest teams in all of the metroplex. It took 7 of our guys to bring down 1 of theirs! Still, we made a good showing and played a good game.

Oh I remember all our homecoming at LJHS and CHS. There is something amazing about this time of year!! Yeah I remember thinking the mums were so stupid, but was really sad the years I didn't get one!! At least I never had one that covered my entire body, front and back!! Do they still have those?

Sorry about losing the game! At least they played hard and everyone had fun!! Happy Homecoming!!

Homecoming was last night for the H.S. I last taught at as well. Filled with a parade, Mr FHS contest, and pep rally. What fun! Plus, they won their game, even better!

Why don't they do mums anymore? They don't do them here anyway. What fun, long ribbons to trip over walking up the stadiums stairs. Ahhhh, memories.

I just like Friday Night Football, homecoming is just an added bonus :)

Maybe the mums are a Texas thing!

Maybe they are. Hey, do you guys remember that one girl at CHS who had that all white mum that covered her front and back completely? Didn't she have some sort of saddle harness (on each shoulder) to keep it on? I also remember that it definitely had twinkle lights and it might have even played music. Where did she keep the battery pack? The poor girl had to wear that stupid thing all day. I remember, too, that she had bought a nice outfit to wear to school that day, but no one could see it because of her ginormous mum! I was not jealous of that one!

And do you girls remember at LJHS (Go Warriors!) that we also had a homecoming?! Jen, you and I made our own mums in 7th grade. Was that creative or lame? I loved Merek Rogers (and if we got married I would've been Ginger Rogers! perfect!!) at the time. And I was so totally afraid of him. Memories.

Whatevs.

I think El Paso, especially, likes to set records for ostentatiously fake flower displays. Ay de mi!

So, of course you remember the CHS homecoming where you and John W. fixed me up with this shy, pretty, trumpet-player girl...who I fell in love with (immediately) and married (nine years later)?

Thanks for that one. And God bless Homecoming.

P.S. My first year teaching high school, Amy and I chaperoned the Sunset H.S. homecoming dance and got to "re-live" old memories. We looked at all the couples and wondered for which ones this was the beginning of something lifelong.
